Beginner Packing Checklist

What you carry affects three things: whether you stay safe, whether the group can help you if something goes sideways, and whether the land handles your visit well. Pack with all three in mind, not just yourself.

Take Care of Yourself

  • Water, food, and a basic first-aid kit.
  • Weather-appropriate layers, and any medication you need daily.
  • Fully charged phone, plus a way to charge it in the field.

Take Care of Your Rig

  • A usable spare tire, jack, and lug wrench sized for your wheels.
  • Tire pressure gauge — Bronco Trail App users have one built in, but carry a physical gauge too.
  • Small tool kit, jumper cables or a jump pack, front and rear recovery points, and a basic strap.

Take Care of the Group

  • A GMRS/FRS radio — most UBC runs coordinate this way once cell signal drops.
  • Emergency contact info shared with someone who isn’t on the run.

Take Care of the Land

  • Trash bag and paper towels — pack out everything you bring in, always.
  • Toilet paper packed out, not left behind.

Winter & Shoulder Season Extras

  • Extra warm layers, gloves, a beanie.
  • Windshield scraper, small shovel, and more water than you think you’ll need.

What You Don't Need on Day One

Over time, you might add recovery gear, upgraded radios, and a dialed camp setup — plus factory options like genuine Ford MOLLE panels for mountable interior storage, or lean on the washout-capable flooring some trims have for muddy-boot days. For your first UBC runs, focus on:

  • Showing up on time at the meetup spot or a little early to meet everyone.
  • Reading the event description carefully; we try hard to provide detailed info anticipating your questions.
  • Completing any required waiver ahead of time or purchasing a forest or recreation pass as needed for the trail.
  • Bringing the basics above and a willingness to listen and learn.
