Seasons, Closures & Trail Timing

Every UBC event decision starts with one question: will running this trail right now cost the land more than it’s worth? Sometimes the answer is yes, and we move or cancel — a gate being unlocked doesn’t tell you what’s actually behind it.

Why Conditions Matter More Than Dates

  • Opening dates shift year to year with snowpack — always check current status, not last year’s.
  • A trail can be bone dry at the trailhead and snow-packed higher up. Elevation changes everything.
  • Spinning 35s in saturated ground doesn’t just get you stuck — it carves ruts that get trails closed for everyone. If you’re cutting trenches, it’s time to turn around.

UBC does not run mud-bog style events. It’s not about being overly cautious — it’s the stewardship half of our mission showing up in scheduling decisions, not just on the trail.

Why Events Sometimes Move or Cancel

  • A gate is still closed, or just barely open with poor conditions.
  • Recent rain has turned the route into a rut factory.
  • Snow or ice makes a shelf road unsafe for a mixed-experience group.
  • Fire restrictions are active.

What You Can Do

  • Be flexible if an event changes location because of weather.
  • Read the event description for seasonal notes.
  • Be honest with your trail leader about your comfort level with snow, ice, and mud.
  • If a section feels wrong once you’re out there, say so — stopping to talk it through is always an option.
