Wildlife & Tread Lightly

A locked rear diff and 35″ tires mean you could push through a wet meadow or crowd wildlife for a photo. That’s exactly the point where capability and judgment need to disagree with each other — and it connects directly to why UBC exists. Our bylaws describe our purpose in plain terms: trail stewardship and public-land education. This page isn’t an add-on to the club; it’s close to the actual reason UBC is a nonprofit.

Wildlife

  • Slow down when you see animals near or on the trail. Never chase, honk at, or crowd them for a photo.
  • Keep pets under control around wildlife, livestock, and open gates.

Fire

  • Follow posted fire restrictions exactly — when it says no fires, it means no fires.
  • Use existing fire rings, and make sure fires are cold to the touch before you leave or sleep.

Camping

  • Keep camp and parking fully on durable surfaces — rock, gravel, hardened dirt — not meadows, wetlands, or cryptobiotic soil.
  • Disperse-camp only where it’s legal, and know the rules for the area you’re in.

Trash & Giving Back

  • Pack out all trash, down to the small stuff, and grab a bit extra when you safely can.
  • Watch for UBC stewardship days — organized time specifically to give back to the trails we run, not just use them.
